The Joy of Cooking

I really enjoy being in the kitchen. This blog is to help me culminate some great recipes, as well as try to inspire others to get into the kitchen. For today's post I want to share some of my favorite memories from the kitchen, as well as some words of wisdom from some of my culinary heroes. Enjoy!

Growing up there were many weekends that I would spend in Pennsylvania with my Nana and Great Pop. My fondest memory of that is how, after sleeping on the cot which was always so exciting to me as a child, Nana would have a HUGE breakfast waiting for us. I would wake up several times a night waiting to hear the sizzling of the skillets. There was always breakfast sausages and orange juice. Sometimes it was pancakes, sometimes french toast or eggs, but there was always OJ and those breakfast sausages.

Now that Nana has been gone for 10 years now, I still think about those breakfasts around their table. When she passed there was a lot I felt like I didn't know about her, but looking back at this one memory I realize that I came to know her better in this moment than any other experience with her.

I've had the privilege of dating a few gentlemen who had vast culinary knowledge. I have adapted one of those meals as the only way I will make tacos. On Valentine's Day 2015 my husband made me a beautiful three course dinner, this was before we were married, and I remember fondly the dessert portion where we got into the kitchen together and made these skewers with brownie, strawberry, whipped cream and marshmallows. Thanks, Kathryn for helping him out with that part. It was darling and so whimsical. I believe you get to see a different side of people when they get into the kitchen. Some people feel uneasy in the kitchen because they are not particularly creative, there are those who love big bold flavors, some who like things muted down, food purists, etc. There's a lot you can tell from who people put out of their kitchens. That day... I learned that my husband had a childlike side.
